PHOTO TIPS

Tips for Photographing Skin Conditions

Better photos lead to better diagnoses. Follow these tips for your consultation.

Use Natural Light

Take photos near a window or outdoors. Avoid flash as it can wash out redness and texture.

Take Multiple Angles

Include a close-up of the affected area and a wider shot showing its location on your body.

Keep the Camera Steady

Hold your phone still or rest it on a surface. Blurry photos make assessment difficult.

Show the Full Area

Capture the entire affected area, including the edges where normal skin meets the condition.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions About Online Skin Consultations

Can a GP diagnose skin conditions online?

Yes. With a video consultation and uploaded photos of the affected area, our Irish-registered GPs can diagnose and treat many common skin conditions including acne, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, fungal infections, rashes, and dermatitis. Clear photos taken in good lighting significantly help with accurate assessment. If a condition requires in-person examination or specialist referral, your GP will advise accordingly.

Should I upload photos before my consultation?

Yes, uploading clear photos of the affected area before your consultation is strongly recommended. Take photos in natural light, include a close-up and a wider shot showing the location on your body. This allows your GP to review the images before the video call and make a more thorough assessment. You can upload photos securely through the GetYourGP patient portal.

What skin conditions can be treated online?

Our GPs can diagnose and treat a wide range of skin conditions online, including acne, eczema (atopic dermatitis), psoriasis, rosacea, fungal infections (such as athlete's foot and ringworm), contact dermatitis, hives (urticaria), cold sores, and mild rashes. Initial assessments for moles and suspicious skin changes can also be conducted, with referral to a dermatologist if needed.

When should I see a dermatologist in person?

You should seek an in-person dermatologist appointment for suspicious or rapidly changing moles, severe skin conditions that have not responded to treatment, large or widespread skin reactions, conditions requiring a biopsy, or any skin lesion that is bleeding, ulcerating, or growing quickly. Our GPs can provide referral letters to Irish dermatologists if needed during your consultation.

Can I get prescription skin treatments online?

Yes. Our GPs can prescribe a full range of dermatological treatments including topical corticosteroids (e.g., hydrocortisone, betamethasone), topical antibiotics (e.g., fusidic acid, clindamycin), retinoids for acne, antifungal creams and tablets, emollients, calcineurin inhibitors for eczema, and oral antibiotics for moderate to severe acne or skin infections. Prescriptions are sent electronically to your chosen pharmacy.

How do online skin consultations work?

The process is simple: first, book a video consultation and upload clear photos of your skin condition through the GetYourGP portal. During the 15-minute video call, your GP will review your photos, discuss your symptoms and medical history, examine the affected area via video, and recommend a treatment plan. If medication is needed, your prescription is sent directly to your chosen pharmacy for same-day collection.
